EXCERPT FROM FIND ME

In slow motion, she recognized what he would do. What she saw and what her mind perceived didn’t connect. His arms opened and wrapped around her. The “you’re crashing” vibe rushed forward in the form of a solid hard body and muscular arms. The embrace removed her anger, eradicated how upset she was with him, and eliminated the shock, just as it had done as a teen, just as he’d done when she was ten trapped in the room searching for her kitty. He soothed her. All the bad disappeared and vanished like a puff of smoke. At least her heart said so, and she allowed it a few moments of bliss, of forgiveness before she remembered her major organ didn’t rule anymore, her mind did.

She had one mission in Heather Ridge, nothing more, to find and meet her soul mate. Okay, yeah, that sounded crazy and didn’t make sense, but the FIND ME candy myth she could believe in, even understand, but not this. Not her arms gripping Coop tighter, not her face burying into his neck smelling his scent that made her eyes roll back into her head.

Hell’s bells, why did her body love pursuing him? Something ripped open inside her, like happiness, comfort, and fulfillment, though she couldn’t put a finger on exactly what. Whatever the feeling, it caused her to soak his shirt with her tears.

If she’d let herself admit the truth, she would confess she missed his touch more than she’d ever missed anything.

His body trembled. Having a quick hug was one thing, but crying over lost time she couldn’t handle. See, her heart didn’t rule. She eased away and wiped a hand under her nose.

Damn him, he didn’t let go. He slid a finger across her cheek. “My God, I’ve missed you.”

This close, she witnessed the compassion in his whiskey eyes reinforcing the tone of his sweet voice. If she’d seen them as a teen when he’d gently spoken, she would have melted, like she wanted to right now. Which she couldn’t do. “I’m mad at you.” He dropped his hand to his side, and she whimpered.

For several long beats, they stared at each other. His internal battles showed in his etched expression, no different from what she believed hers looked like—sadness, hurt, regret. She longed to reach out to him, to touch his skin and relive the tingles that would no doubt cover her skin.

His rock hard body stiffened and all thoughts of closing the gap for physical contact vanished. Thoughts of doing or saying anything evaporated as if an industrial-size vacuum made a pass through the open barn, taking the energy and the air. She had to get out of there, get away from him and his air-sucking presence. She spun on her heels fast, too fast, and stumbled backwards.

His warm hands, strong arms, and firm body engulfed her. Lord help her. She moaned and relished in the body contact, his heat easing her rattled nerves. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, next to her ear. “That was out of line.”

“It’s the truth,” she managed to say, though the intensity in her voice dwindled. “No need for an apology.”

He didn’t reply, didn’t move, just held her close. A soothing feeling sparked her insides, stimulating her libido and exciting her. She relaxed more fully against him, giving him her full weight. With an arm under her legs and one around her waist, he carried her to the front of a large, round hay bale where he lowered to the ground and rested her in his lap. He didn’t speak, didn’t try to kiss her, just held her close and tight. His compassion, his toasty body, and his security oozed a welcoming invitation, and she burrowed into him. Her libido would have to wait; she needed this, wanted his solidness. Inhaling his yummy, outdoorsy scent, she released a slow shaky breath.

“I gotcha,” he said. “I always have.” His words faded as her body gave into the fatigue of not one stressful day, but over seven hundred.

A single gunshot echoed in the night. An invisible death-grip tightened his throat. The road and buildings warped. Sound faded. Cole’s fear came to fruition, the worst moment of his life. He needed eyes on Dina now! Cole forced his legs to move faster into the darkness. The small amount of glow, seeping around the trailer from the junker’s headlights, gave him a visual to the only other intact car, parked next to the overturned truck. The cloud pattern shifted and the moon brightened the darkened sky. Beyond the downed trailer, demolished truck, past the crinkled unmarked car, hope soared, clenching Cole’s heart and stealing his breath. He stopped and stared, not sure if he could believe his eyes. The moon spotlighted Dina standing in the middle of the wreckage, staring at the road, her body shaking. Fright and pain visible in her profile felt like a bullet to his chest, forcing the wind out of his lungs and weakening his muscles. Her gaze left whatever caught her attention and she peered over her shoulder. Their eyes locked. In that moment of time, no one else existed, not the swirling bright blue and red lights approaching or the loud sirens demanding attention. Too afraid if he ran, his legs would give out from the overwhelming emotions, he walked toward her. Not moving her gaze from his, she pulled her lips inward and wiped a hand across her face. She’d been through so much. Instinctively, he wanted to pull her to him, feel her warmth against his chest. Afraid sudden movement might scare her, he tempered his urge and stopped in front of her. “Awe, babe.” He stroked a finger down her cheek and searched her face. Tears welled in her eyes, and something more frightening smeared across her skin—a reddish-brown color—blood.

Do you believe in ghosts?

In the romantic suspense Mystic Hearts, I touched on the idea that ghosts exist in Greenwood Manor in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Spotsylvania and the nearby city Fredericksburg are counties some of the Civil War battles were fought.

A sneak peek into the sightings mentioned in Mystic Hearts:—

The Madison Hand was a fictitious scare tactic by my oldest brother. He loved to scare and tease me. The Madison Hand, as I described in the book, was taken from one of the many things he invented to torment me. I can smile now with fond memories, but then…not so much.

As for the other item I mentioned, the white patch flowing through the sky was not another tactic constructed by my brother. Each time I saw the bizarre shape and movements, my brother wasn’t home, so I can’t blame or accuse him…

I’m not alone. Others have witnessed peculiar sightings in Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg and the surrounding areas.

People either believe in ghosts or they don’t. Many rationalize the strange phenomena as a freak of nature or their eyes playing tricks on them for a brief moment. Others wholeheartedly trust their sight and know what they saw.
