It's a Wonderful Undead Life

What happens when you pray for an angel and get a vampire instead?
Leave R.E. a comment with your name and email addy to find out!

It's been a rough couple of years for Cailey Kantor. Facing her first Christmas alone and bad financial news, she prays for an angel to fix her problems. Instead, a sadistic, sociopathic vampire, with the goal of starting a vampire war, attacks her and forces her to drink blood stolen from the Nosferatu Gabriel Blautsauger. Gabe must complete Cailey's turning or she will die. In doing so he risks losing his yet unfound soulmate. But something about the lovely mortal speaks to his heart. Once her transformation is complete, he and Cailey find themselves embroiled in a battle that could cost them all they hold dear. Faced with lies, abduction, and betrayal Cailey wonders if the vampire she is falling fangs over heart for is in it for love or if she's just a means to stop a war.

Excerpt:
Cailey’s scrub top was gone, exposing her lacy bra, and she was in the process of stepping out of the drawstring pants. She glanced up, her gaze a bit wild. “Hurry. Hurry. I think I might explode from all this energy inside me. I feel like a popcorn maker and all the kernels are popping at once. So much pressure in here.” She dropped a hand to the juncture of her thighs and pressed it against her.
“Cailey?” Gabe’s tone was an octave higher than normal. When she straightened up, clad only in her underwear, he gulped for air. “What are you doing?”
“Getting ready, of course.” Holding her wadded up pants in front of her, she frowned at him. “I thought you said you knew what you were doing.”
“I thought I did…” His voice trailed off, his gaze locked on Cailey’s tight body. How had he missed just how beautiful she was? Hidden beneath the baggy scrubs was a living miracle. He took in the slight swell of flesh above the lucky bra cupping her breasts, and his fingers itched to run down the indentation of her waist.
She dropped the pants to the floor. “Come on. Come on, Gabe the Babe. I know all about when you were at university and all the female vamps used to chase you around and gloat if they made time with you.”
“Ahem.” Gabe realized he had his sister to thank for this new conundrum. More than a bit leery, he asked, “What else did Metta tell you?”
“That we’re both kind of like virgins.”
     “I beg your pardon?”

And now for a little about R.E. Mullins!

Welcome to Tattered Pages, R.E.! I'm so glad you're here. Tell us a how your writing career began.

I grew up in Missouri and was a phlebotomist in Springfield, MO for 10 years. Patients often came in and told vampire jokes or called us bloodsuckers and vampires. The idea started germinating about a story of a night shift phlebotomist who was turned into a vampire. I mulled it over for a long time before doing anything about it. Then one Thanksgiving, I announced to my stunned family that I was going to write a book. And that's how it all began.

Oh my gosh, that's so cool! Talk about life imitating art. LOL Okay, so you wrote that book...which leads me to ask, what are you working on now?

Right now I'm working on the second book about the Blautsauger family. This story titled Vampire in the Scrying Glass features Gabe's brother, Rafe and Cailey's best friend, Morgan. At present time, I'm a little over half way finished.

Sounds outstanding! I could tell from the exceprt that this one might be a little steamy. What heat level do you prefer to write?

I want to keep the heat level consistent with the characters. My first book is pretty spicy but the second one is less so. It seems to suit their personalities better.

Gotcha! I've found the characters often dictate how much they want to leave that bedroom door open. So does your husband/signficant other read your work? And if so, what's their reaction?

My eldest son and daughter (both grown) read my book. My son said he had a little trouble reading love scenes his mother had written. So I provided him with a bookmark listing the pages he should skip and things went much more smoothly.

LOL That's funny. I shudder to think of what my son would say. What else goes on at home? Do you have any pets?

I have a mixed breed dog that my youngest son and I found during a float trip on the Current River. He and his sister had been abandoned in the hotel room next to us. The housekeeper decided to keep the female but left the little guy outside. When my son found out, he went out and searched for him. He was a bedraggled sight. Matted fur, a torn third eyelid and covered with beggar lice. The vet said he thought him to be a beagle mix. One hundred pounds later, the vets just shake their heads when they look at Sabu and say he is a mix of many things - many, many things. All I know is he is the sweetest tempered and prettiest dog I've ever known. He listens to every version of my writings and is always supportive.

My german shorthair is my most loyal writing partner. She sits with her head in my lap and snores really loud! Thanks for being my guest today, R.E. And for those of you who would like to enter the contest, don't forget to leave a comment and your name will be automatically added to the drawing for R.E.'s free e-book give-away! Whoot!

Interesting premise. Loved the excerpt. I, too, find the characters dictate the heat level. I have a historical novella where the heroine planted her hands on her hips and declared she wasn't having any of that stuff. She wasn't talking to the hero, she was speaking to me. LOL Good luck to you!!

Hi Robin,
I love, love the title, and the excerpt.

I think I have your dog's cousin. I picked my Beagle mix up at the pound. He is almost 100 pounds, I think the B word they were looking for was Boxer.

Good luck.

Interesting excerpt! All my fur children are rescues - yes all as in 4 of them. Yeah, I know. I need a new hobby. LOL geelgirlusa (at) gmail.com

Good idea about the bookmarks for your son ;-) My kids (2 already grown-up and 2 in their teens) would like me to write stories again but I was thinking (if I started again, that is) how it would be awkward having them reading some of the (not that many, but still...) relatively spicy scenes. Yikes!

Great post!

What a clever idea to mix the Christmas angle (or should I say angel) with the vampire theme! This sounds like such a fun story. Please enter me in the giveaway:

I know I'm late, but had to drop in anyway. Your book sounds fun, R.E. I love your dog story!

Thanks Calisa
I'm glad you got to join the party. We're having a blizzard here today in Colorado Springs. Sabu likes to go out long enough to get all covered. When he comes in we toss a beach towel over him and he curls up in it and goes to sleep.

What a fun little excerpt. I'm certainly interested.
