Happy Easter on Snippet Sunday

A couple years back, I wrote an edgy inspirational novel entitled Flicker. On this special Snippet Sunday, as some of us celebrate the renewal of life freely given through the ultimate sacrifice, I felt it only right to share a few lines from that story.

May you all have a blessed Easter filled with love, peace and joy.

A lot can happen in two weeks. Parents can die and be buried, promises made and broken. Hearts can be shattered, lives destroyed. A young man can suffer the iniquities of an entire civilization and be resurrected. Grace can be restored.
If I’m certain of one thing, children are full of hope. Their faith doesn’t appear only during moments of weakness. No seconds tick by when a child isn’t imagining the impossible, dreaming of happiness, expecting joy. They face life with such optimism. Maybe because they’re so fresh from heaven, belief is a given.

Not until life gets a hold of a person does all that fade.

And what of his love? Did she hasten to greet him as well?

Then a white star amid a sea of silver and blue crested the ridge. His pulse thundered and he gritted his teeth in expectant hope. If his eyes did not deceive him, his lady rode Belial, a devilish white stallion that had thrown and all but trampled a dozen of his men. A falcon circled overhead, riding the same draft that toyed with the folds of her white gown.

What boon was this? Did she hold sway over wild beasts? To learn as much would not surprise him, for she had tamed his heart as well.

At Long Last, Risk Factors is HERE!

Hi AJ! I’m excited to join you here once again, with my first Lyrical Press release, Risk Factors.
Click the banner to view Calisa's tour dates!

I debated what to write about today and decided to talk about the writing process. More specifically, how I wrote this particular story.
For starters this book came about as a challenge from a critique partner who asked our whole group if we wanted to try to write for a one month thing Mills and Boon did. It was a guarantee to get your writing in front of one of their editors, no doubt and no slush pile. I accepted her challenge and began.
First off, I want to say that was not the best idea to write a book. It was not in my comfortable genre so I chased insecurities all the way through writing it. I knew it wouldn’t be good enough, though in the end it was—to my surprise.
I don’t recommend anyone write something they aren’t familiar with in three months. I’m a champion of writing outside your comfort box, just not on a whim and in so little of time. But that’s what I did with Risk Factors. It turned out good in the end, but not with the publisher it was written for.
I’m thrilled to have found a home for this story with Lyrical Press. I’m equally excited to be a member of their author family since submitting this book to Piper Denna just over a year ago in a blog pitch.
But it was a rocky road there for a while.
I began the story from scratch in August with one chapter. In September and early October I wrote two more chapters at the request of the editor who pulled my submission. Through the rest of October and all of November I wrote the remaining nine chapters, and finished the first complete draft on Nov. 30, at one minute to midnight.
You need to know that I’d promised myself to finish before Dec. first so I’d be able to get it critiqued before a pre-Christmas submission to the editor at Mills and Boon.
I did a rough edit and sent it to my cps group on Dec tenth and told them I needed a rush job on it. I’d promised the editor in October I’d have it to her before Christmas! Okay- I don’t suggest anyone tell an editor they’ll write, edit and submit a book in less than two months…
Stress? Oy, yes. I had stress to spare! I’m proud I made my deadline, but I will NEVER do that again!
I got the WIP back from the wonderful CP group around Dec 15th and on Dec. 18th I hit the send button. I had made it ahead of schedule. Then I spend the next six weeks double-guessing my wisdom and talent.
I have never tried to do this since, and I doubt I’ll ever do it again. It was a whirlwind book that, thankfully, has a happy ending.
Here’s what the fuss is all about:

Love, like life, is not without risk.

BLURB

Veterinarian Vivian Dane has purchased her uncle’s practice in the tiny town of Wales, Missouri, where most residents still doubt her ability to treat their pets. But Viv is used to being considered less-worthy than her predecessors. After all, her parents are world-renowned wildlife vets, and most everyone is unimpressed she’s chosen to not follow directly in their footsteps. Now Connor, a patient’s owner, is hot for Viv, but clearly doesn’t think she’s dating material because he has a daughter…who he believes no woman is good enough for.

Being a perfect dad is EMT paramedic Connor’s life focus. He can’t seem to stay away from sexy Doctor Viv, but attraction is as far as he’ll ever let it go. His mother abandoned him, leaving him to be raised in the foster system, and then his wife abandoned both him and their daughter. He absolutely will not risk bringing another woman into his little girl’s life and having her feel the hurt of being left…again.

Forfeiting is easier than attempting and failing. So why does Viv feel compelled to prove she’s a sure bet for Connor and his daughter? Can Connor trust Viv--and himself--enough to play
the possibilities?

EXCERPT

It was close to five o’clock and Viv wanted to go home. Winter hadn’t reached the Midwest yet, but from September through October the temperatures often dipped and dove sporadically, before diving for the long winter ahead. There’d been a slight chill in the air that morning and she hoped for a few more weeks of warmth before harsh weather moved in.
She looked forward to a hot soak in the bathtub, but Skittles was due for pick-up first. Connor had assured her he’d pick her up, or have his father get her before five. She glanced at her watch again. Four-fifty-six. She didn’t mind staying late if she needed to; it would be a shame to leave the nervous animal alone another night.
She opened the small closet to put the dust mop away.
“Hello.”
With a start, she spun and her hand caught the broom handle on her way around. Gasping, she grabbed uselessly, horrified as the cleaning tool flew sideways from the closet. In slow motion she saw it shoot out against Connor’s shoulder and fall with a sharp snap onto the tile floor.
“Oh! I’m so--so sorry! Are you hurt?” Instant heat rushed up her neck and she bent to reclaim the errant broom to shove into the closet. She slammed the door and leaned against it on a sharp breath.
“I’m fine. You worried your killer broom might attack again? You might consider putting a lock on the door,” he said with a crooked smile.
Puzzled, Viv looked around and realized with total humiliation how it appeared she’d trapped the broom inside the closet--when in actuality, she wanted to climb through the door beside the instrument and hide.
“Of course not. That would be silly. I didn’t expect you right now.”
“It’s two minutes of five. I told you I’d be here for Skittles. Is it too late?”
Right. The skunk. “No. I’m sure she’s more than ready to go home. Do you have the pet carrier to put her in?” She probably didn’t need to ask when Connor stood empty-handed before her.
He lowered his head and she knew he’d forgotten it, fought back a smile at his forgetfulness. “Sorry. I drove straight from work and didn’t think about it.”
“No worry. I have one you can borrow.” Which meant he’d have to see her again. She’d definitely need to see him again.
“Thank you. I’ll bring it back tomorrow.”
“Oh, there’s no rush. I keep a few on hand for emergencies.” She led him back to the cage where the skunk still huddled, and got a carrier while he opened the cage to retrieve his daughter’s pet. As he lifted the black fur ball out, Viv set a pink case next to him.
He hissed under his breath and almost let the animal loose. Viv opened the cage and held it upright for him to lower the skunk down inside and shut the door. Once he stood with the pet taxi, she detected a smear of red on one finger.
“She bit you?” Skunk bite, rabies, germs…
“It’s fine. When she’s scared she tends to nip a warning like a cat.” Connor’s lack of care concerned Viv, however.
“I should clean it with antiseptic before you go.”
“I’ll tend it when I get home.”
“But, it may have germs…get infected.”
“It’s not the first time, and her rabies vaccination is current. Thank you, but it’s not necessary.”
Viv stopped by a cabinet on the way to the front reception area to grab ointment and a Band-Aid.

Fender Bender Blues with Niecey Roy!

Her life took a wrong turn.
He's driven by success.
They didn't count on crashing into love...

Rachel Bennett loved her job until the day she finds herself doubting her choices.  Now she's hunting for a new career, but starting over isn't easy.  Her plan is simple—no distractions until she finds her dream job.  She didn't plan on fate throwing her a curveball in the form of a fender bender with a sexy guy in an expensive suit.

Craig Larsen is a wealthy, successful business owner with a plan of his own: survive his current PR nightmare and stay away from his overly determined ex-girlfriend.  His need for control and personal success is turned upside down when he meets Rach, a sassy redhead who can't drive.

Soon they find themselves battling with Rach's grumpy old neighbor, toilet-papering the trees of a high school nemesis, and fighting over the last slice of pizza.  Can two very different people plus one fender bender equal a chance at forever?

"Classic cars, garden gnomes, and steam romance? My kind of book!
~Bestselling author, Kate Perry

"Reading Niecey Roy's Fender Bender Blues is like eating Lays Potato Chips. Once you start, you can't stop! It's just that good! For a new (non-fattening) addiction, read Niecey Roy!
~Robyn Peterman, author of How Hard Can It Be?

EXCERPT:

“Now what?”

“Nothing.” Rach sniffed.

Craig shifted to eye her warily. “Since when do you answer me with single words?”

“Since I decided I’m not talking to you,” she answered with a shrug, crumpling up the white paper wrapper from her sub.

Craig leaned his face in close to her neck and enjoyed the startled jerk of her shoulders. Her eyes opened wide in surprise. His breath shifted a few strands of hair at the nape of her neck as he whispered, “Why, because you want me?”

“You’re incorrigible,” she said, breathless, her cheeks flushed.

She’s enjoying this. The thought pleased him. Rach was on her back beside him now, her eyes closed. He glanced around the park to see if anyone was watching. No one was. He could swoop in for a kiss and no one would catch him. No one would care, he told himself. She won’t mind

“I can feel you staring.”

Craig smiled down at her. “So what.”

She peeked at him with one green eye. “So stop it.”

“And if I don’t?” Maybe she’d tackle him, push him down on the blanket and…

She didn’t. She promptly closed her eye and went back to pretending indifference. “I’ll hit you, that’s what.”

“Not if I do this, you won’t.”

He’d only meant it to be a short kiss, but the pleasure of touching his lips to hers kept him there longer. Her tongue was velvet soft and warm against his and the slow mating of their mouths quickened his heartbeat even as he told himself, It’s no big deal, just a kiss.

She nipped his bottom lip and sent heat sliding through his body. The woman could kiss.

She whispered soft against his lips, “Now why don’t you admit that it’s you who wants me.”

Fender Bender Blues is available at:  Amazon print and eBook or The Wild Rose Press

Niecey Roy knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, but her moment of enlightenment came after watching the movie You’ve Got Mail. It was then she realized her place in life and happily parked her butt on writing romance. Her dream was to create sexy vixens, hunky, half naked heroes, and above all, romance; lots and lots of butterflies in the belly, breathless first kisses and happily-ever-afters.

When she’s not at her day job where she works as a legal assistant, she can be found at home at a cluttered desk, pounding her tired little fingers away on a keyboard with nothing but black pepper flavored sunflower seeds and Visine as her weapons for mass-romance-novel-creation. When her fingers need a break, you’ll find her at a table with friends, drinking a few martinis and showing off a new pair of (sometimes ridiculous) high heels. She’s usually the loudest at the table and most often the one snorting with laughter.

First Ever Snippet Sunday!

Happy St. Patrick's Day and Welcome to Tattered Pages! For the first time ever, I'm posting a snippet from my current WIP Caedmon's Curse, Book II of The Golden Key Trilogy! Whoot!

Desire flickered in his gaze, and caution warred with desperation in her heart. Yet surely one kiss was worth the risk. A simple touch in exchange for her memories.

His arms tensed at her waist. One heated, taut thigh slipped amid the folds of her skirt, nestling between her legs. “You test the limits of my restraint, madam.”A thrill coursed her skin when his breath skimmed the moisture on her lips. “Be forewarned. What you request, I shall not give lightly.”

“If you love me, Prince Caedmon, then prove it. Now kiss me.”

Have You Ever Been Starstruck?

No? Well if not be prepared to change your ways! My dear friend Paige Thomas is here today with her latest release and it's getting all sorts of GREAT REVIEWS! Check out this blurb and excerpt!

The faceless woman who haunts rock legend Jesse Maurello’s dreams is just a myth, a steamy byproduct of his vivid imagination and too many days on the road. Yet something about the green-eyed vision he meets on the plane to New York calls to him, in more ways than one. He will have her beneath him—or on top of him—tonight.
Career-driven graphic artist Samantha Raven has many talents, her psychic abilities among them. But nothing could’ve prepared her for the talents of a sexy rock god who seduces her into his bed—or the obsessed fan who threatens her life. Her sizzling night of passion with the infamous Jerico front man is purely chance...or is it? Betrayal and danger follow their wild ride of orgasmic exploration. Seems fate had a plan neither Jesse nor Sam saw coming.

Excerpt:
“No, that’s okay. Leave it. Have a good night, Katherine. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He placed his hand on the small of Sam’s back, leading her to the elevator for the private penthouse suites.
Inside, Jesse swiped his room key, pushed the button for the top floor, and then leaned back against the wall. The doors closed and the elevator began to rise. He still hadn’t come up with anything plausible to entice Sam to continue their pleasant evening together. Everything that came to mind sounded like a cheap come-on and he didn’t want to scare her off. He didn’t want to be a jerk. It felt different with her, but he couldn’t pinpoint exactly what “it” was. He didn’t want to rush her, but he could hardly contain the pure lust overwhelming him. She made him as horny as hell, like a teenager trying to find just the right moment to grab that first bit of tit at the drive-in instead of a seasoned, forty-year-old man.
For Christ’s sake, Jess, get a grip. You’ve fucked the most beautiful women in the world! This should be a walk in the park.
But none of them made your insides twist in knots by simply thinking of saying goodbye...did they?
Sam looked toward the ceiling, the numbers lighting as they passed each level. Her lids were at half-mast, and guilt welled in his chest at the thought of her missing more sleep just to be with him.
As if she’d heard his thoughts, she turned her head to look at him. She gave him a weary smile and yawned, covering her mouth with the back of her hand. “Oh, excuse me. I haven’t slept much this week. I think it’s finally caught up with me.”
The elevator pinged before opening, revealing thick navy-blue carpeting and decorative silver wall lights with white shades. Jesse led Sam down the corridor to the door at the far end and handed her the room card. He leaned heavily against the door frame, resting his head against the wood, arms crossed, conjuring the sexiest smile he could muster. “Well...I don’t suppose you wanna invite me in for a night cap? You’ve got all my favorite goodies in your room, you know.”
He lifted his head and moved forward, closing in on her. She stepped back and hit the wall behind her. He placed his hands on the wall on either side of her face, trapping her, and she gasped, just a whisper of breath leaving he lips. He caressed the side of her cheek, sliding his fingertips down her jaw, and then swept her bottom lip with his thumb, running it back and forth, drawing her lips open.
When she parted them breathlessly, inviting him in, he caught her mouth in a slow, deep sensual kiss, gently flicking his tongue, teasing her as he pushed his hands inside her coat and curved them around her back, up her spine. Her warmth radiated through the woolen layer of her sweater, teasing his palms and increasing his desire. Cautiously, he slid his hands down and lifted the bottom of her sweater until he reached her blouse.
He stroked her lower back through the soft fabric and pulled her closer.
*****
Her head spun once more. Her knees weakened. She had never been kissed so passionately.
     Legs don’t fail me now!
She trembled in his arms as he tasted her, trailing both his hands down to cup her arse and steady her, pushing her harder into the front of his jeans.
He was hard and...well...big, and seemingly had no qualms about making his arousal known. There wasn’t a breath of space between their hips and with a slight thrust, he elicited a moan from her. His lips were soft and giving, yet demanding, pulling her toward the brink of ecstasy. She wasn’t sure how much she could take without crying out for more. He pulsed against her inner thigh and the devil inside her screamed to be sated.
After releasing her lips, he rested his forehead gently on hers, allowing her to catch her breath. He kissed the tip of her nose as she slowly opened her eyes. She was still giddy, her heart racing double-time.
     Now. That. Was a kiss.

Here's a little more about Paige!
Australian wife and mother who escaped a career in I.T and began to write. Starstruck was the end result. Now a multi-published author with Ellora’s Cave! I love to write about love, but like to add a bit more spice (well, okay, a LOT more). And possibly a little thriller, a touch of suspense, maybe a dash of mystery...or even some paranormal to really shake things up. Imagination is my game, creativity my middle name. I love all the arts—dabble in many—but writing is my main hobby, er, occupation. I love to laugh, and find men with a wicked sense of humour to be sexy as hell!

CASPER

Where’s the little girl gone?
The one with the sparkle in her eyes?
So rambunctious
Ambitious
Unstoppable in her plight

To feed a ravenous appetite
A craving for written words
Brushstrokes
Human hands molding clay
Melodic sounds
Music soothes her soul
Imagination...her high
Where’s the little girl gone?
Outgrown?
Forgotten?
Does she even remember me?
Does she care?
She had so much to say
Where is the rebel with a cause?
I miss her

She’s here, she never left
She was pushed to the corner
For another day
The days grew longer
Real life her Master
Until the girl finally stood
Clapped her hands
Demanded attention
She still has a lot to say
And the time is now
She speaks
No longer a girl
The girl has gone, grown
But her imagination lives on
The woman is here
To stay
The girl was right
Never too old to play

It's a Wonderful Undead Life

What happens when you pray for an angel and get a vampire instead?
Leave R.E. a comment with your name and email addy to find out!

It's been a rough couple of years for Cailey Kantor. Facing her first Christmas alone and bad financial news, she prays for an angel to fix her problems. Instead, a sadistic, sociopathic vampire, with the goal of starting a vampire war, attacks her and forces her to drink blood stolen from the Nosferatu Gabriel Blautsauger. Gabe must complete Cailey's turning or she will die. In doing so he risks losing his yet unfound soulmate. But something about the lovely mortal speaks to his heart. Once her transformation is complete, he and Cailey find themselves embroiled in a battle that could cost them all they hold dear. Faced with lies, abduction, and betrayal Cailey wonders if the vampire she is falling fangs over heart for is in it for love or if she's just a means to stop a war.

Excerpt:
Cailey’s scrub top was gone, exposing her lacy bra, and she was in the process of stepping out of the drawstring pants. She glanced up, her gaze a bit wild. “Hurry. Hurry. I think I might explode from all this energy inside me. I feel like a popcorn maker and all the kernels are popping at once. So much pressure in here.” She dropped a hand to the juncture of her thighs and pressed it against her.
“Cailey?” Gabe’s tone was an octave higher than normal. When she straightened up, clad only in her underwear, he gulped for air. “What are you doing?”
“Getting ready, of course.” Holding her wadded up pants in front of her, she frowned at him. “I thought you said you knew what you were doing.”
“I thought I did…” His voice trailed off, his gaze locked on Cailey’s tight body. How had he missed just how beautiful she was? Hidden beneath the baggy scrubs was a living miracle. He took in the slight swell of flesh above the lucky bra cupping her breasts, and his fingers itched to run down the indentation of her waist.
She dropped the pants to the floor. “Come on. Come on, Gabe the Babe. I know all about when you were at university and all the female vamps used to chase you around and gloat if they made time with you.”
“Ahem.” Gabe realized he had his sister to thank for this new conundrum. More than a bit leery, he asked, “What else did Metta tell you?”
“That we’re both kind of like virgins.”
     “I beg your pardon?”

And now for a little about R.E. Mullins!

Welcome to Tattered Pages, R.E.! I'm so glad you're here. Tell us a how your writing career began.

I grew up in Missouri and was a phlebotomist in Springfield, MO for 10 years. Patients often came in and told vampire jokes or called us bloodsuckers and vampires. The idea started germinating about a story of a night shift phlebotomist who was turned into a vampire. I mulled it over for a long time before doing anything about it. Then one Thanksgiving, I announced to my stunned family that I was going to write a book. And that's how it all began.

Oh my gosh, that's so cool! Talk about life imitating art. LOL Okay, so you wrote that book...which leads me to ask, what are you working on now?

Right now I'm working on the second book about the Blautsauger family. This story titled Vampire in the Scrying Glass features Gabe's brother, Rafe and Cailey's best friend, Morgan. At present time, I'm a little over half way finished.

Sounds outstanding! I could tell from the exceprt that this one might be a little steamy. What heat level do you prefer to write?

I want to keep the heat level consistent with the characters. My first book is pretty spicy but the second one is less so. It seems to suit their personalities better.

Gotcha! I've found the characters often dictate how much they want to leave that bedroom door open. So does your husband/signficant other read your work? And if so, what's their reaction?

My eldest son and daughter (both grown) read my book. My son said he had a little trouble reading love scenes his mother had written. So I provided him with a bookmark listing the pages he should skip and things went much more smoothly.

LOL That's funny. I shudder to think of what my son would say. What else goes on at home? Do you have any pets?

I have a mixed breed dog that my youngest son and I found during a float trip on the Current River. He and his sister had been abandoned in the hotel room next to us. The housekeeper decided to keep the female but left the little guy outside. When my son found out, he went out and searched for him. He was a bedraggled sight. Matted fur, a torn third eyelid and covered with beggar lice. The vet said he thought him to be a beagle mix. One hundred pounds later, the vets just shake their heads when they look at Sabu and say he is a mix of many things - many, many things. All I know is he is the sweetest tempered and prettiest dog I've ever known. He listens to every version of my writings and is always supportive.

My german shorthair is my most loyal writing partner. She sits with her head in my lap and snores really loud! Thanks for being my guest today, R.E. And for those of you who would like to enter the contest, don't forget to leave a comment and your name will be automatically added to the drawing for R.E.'s free e-book give-away! Whoot!

Bio: R. E. Mullins was born and raised in Joplin, Missouri. She has also lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mt. Clemens, Michigan, Springfield, Missouri and Colorado Springs, Colorado. Though she has loved each area, the Ozarks hold a special place in her heart. That is why she set her fictional town of Amber Heights there. She worked as a Phlebotomist for ten years and assisted in a Continuing Education Course in Phlebotomy for several years. Now she is concentrating on writing.
